  • Yanzihkou(Swallo Grotto)

    Yanzihkou(Swallo Grotto)

Following the Central Cross-Island Highway, at Yanzikou (Swallow Grotto) the rock cliffs of the Liwu River gorge seem to reach to heaven while the river runs its swiftest and the distance between the gorge walls so narrow that they almost seem to touch each other. Along the Yanzikou (Swallow Grotto) trail which runs about a half kilometer starting from the entrance to Swallow Grotto to the Jinheng Bridge, you can enjoy the sights of the Liwu River from nearly straight above the water, the potholes on the cliff faces, the springs sprinkled along the lower parts of the walls, as well as the famous rock formation "Chieftain's profile rock". As of early 2005 the Yanzikou (Swallow Grotto) Trail was separated from the highway by a simple concrete divider. The road was narrow, resulting in frequent congestion in the area. Consequently, the Park Administration set about building a two-lane tunnel for vehicular traffic to let walkers enjoy the sights of this spectacular part of the gorge uninterrupted by cars and buses. There are two Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou) tunnels, linked by Ludan Bridge- were completed in June 1, 2007. West-east vehicular traffic must use the tunnels. The old highway is now a pedestrian path and is also open to vehicular traffic going west only that must proceed slowly.

  • Jiuqudong Trail (Tunnel of nine turns)

Jiuqudong Trail (Tunnel of nine turns)

This is the most magnificent part of Taroko Gorge, where the sheer cliffs face each other. During the exploration stage, it is the especially difficult and dangerous part to explore. When the wind comes from the broad river valley to the narrow valley it is forced upwards when it hits the cliff face. The Jiuqudong tunnel was constructed 1996, so that the visitors can view the rock folds, joints and faults of the marble cliffs. The two cliffs are so close to each other, and it looks like they are joining to each other if seen from afar. This section has the reputation of "Nine Turns of the Coiled Dragon". The distance between the cliffs is only around 10-meters wide. In the small gap in the rocks, the narrow Kelan River's rush by, forming a "Fish leaping across the dragon gate" scenery. Have you seen a fish swimming upstream? The trail is a must-see point and one should stop by and enjoy the spectacular scenery that has been formed by tens of thousands of years of river erosion. The number nine in Chinese implying "many" is heavily used in Chinese expression.

  • Tianxiang

    Tianxiang

Tianxiang is a large river terrace recreational area in Taroko National Park. Dasha River and Taci Jili River converge at Tianxiang to become Liwu River. The Sakuma Samata Shrine was erected here during the Japanese Era (1895-1945). When the Central Cross-Island Highway reached here Wen Tian Xiang Park was built at the top of the terrace. On the north-western side is the Tianxiang Youth Activity Center (Youth Hostel) and a Catholic Church is next to it. The original lovely Pudu suspension bridge was reconstructed into concrete in 2003 due to the safety reasons. At one end it has a tall White Robed Guanyin Statue. The 7-story high Tian Feng Pagoda, Giant Statute of the Bodhisattva, Xiangde Temple, and, in 1968, Daxiong Baodian temple, have been built on the terrace and have become popular spots for visitors and worshipers. This area has large parking space, recreational Plum Garden, and the 5 star hotel-Silks Place Taroko. This is the only 5 star hotel in Taroko National Park. Behind the Silks Place Taroko Hotel is the Tianxiang Presbyterian Church.

  • Wunwu Temple

    Wunwu Temple

During the Japanese occupation period there were two temples on the banks of the lake: Longfeng Temple in Shueishe Village and Yihua Hall in what is now Yitashao. But when the Japanese built their hydroelectric power plants, the water levels rose, and the temples had to be removed. The Japanese electric company paid compensation, and the temple managers decided to combine their resources and build a single new temple at Songboling on the northern shore of the lake. The result was today's Wenwu Temple. The architecture of the temple has the palace style of northern China. It is of a large and imposing structure, with three separate halls. On the second floor of the front hall is a shrine devoted to the First Ancestor Kaiji and the God of Literature; the central hall is devoted to Guan Gong, the God of War, and the warrior-god Yue Fei; the rear hall is dedicated to Confucius. This is the only Confucius Temple in Taiwan that keeps its central door open. Temple officials say that they do this because the temple is on the bank of Sun Moon Lake and has many tourists, so they keep the door open for the convenience of the visitors. The bronze statue of a seated Confucius makes this also the only Confucius temple in Taiwan that contains an image of the sage. In addition to Confucius, there are also statues of his disciples, Mencius and Zihsih. These three images originally came from Mainland China. They were taken to Japan to escape the Boxer Rebellion near the end of the Qing Dynasty; later on, they were reproduced and brought to Wunwu Temple. Another interesting feature of the temple is the two vermillion stone lions on the two sides of the front plaza. They were donated by Wu Huo-shih, the late chairman of the Shin Kong Life Insurance Company, whose name meant "fire lion." Year of Steps at Wenwu Temple Before the round-the-lake road was built, the only way to get to Wunwu Temple was to take a boat to the pier below the temple and climb up a very steep flight of steps. In early days, these steps were called the "stairway to Heaven." Completion of the road made it far easier for travelers to reach the temple, and the steps below the temple were gradually forgotten. The administration recently renovated the steps. There are now 366 steps covering the 150-meter distance, symbolizing the 366 days in a year (including an extra day in leap year). At the step that represents the first day of each month, there is now a platform where people can stop and rest. Information related to the 24 solar periods is also carved into the steps, so that visitors can learn something about China's traditional folk culture as they slowly ascend the steps. The steps are now known as the "Year of Steps at Wunwu Temple", and make a very interesting visit. There are also wind chimes along the steps, which are used by visitors to ask for blessings. Their function is somewhat like that of a wishing well. Visitors first go to Wunwu Temple and buy wind chimes for their specific animal of the Chinese zodiac, and then have the chimes passed through incense smoke by temple workers. Then the visitors write their names and the contents of their wishes, and go to the top of the Year of Steps to ring the chimes, and finally go down the steps and hang the chimes beside those steps that represent their birthdays, symbolizing the completion of their efforts.

  • The Paper Dome

    The Paper Dome

The Paper Dome New Homeland Scenic Park is located southeast of the Taomi Eco-Village with an area measuring up to 3.5 hectares. The paper dome was designed by architect Shigeru Ban after the Takatori Church collapsed in the 1995 Osaka-Kobe Earthquake as a temporary site for a summit. After it fulfilled its local mission, the paper dome that symbolized the reconstruction effort was shipped all the way to the Taomi community to continue its relief mission. The church is held up by 58 paper columns and even the bench chairs in the church are made using paper. This was designed to convey the message that materials as soft as paper can hold up a building; the roof, exterior and even the rectangular corridors are both made of fiber-reinforced plastics and sunshine shoots through the roof to present a sacred atmosphere for the church. The Learning Center next to the church is made of steel, which is bent into all kinds of shapes. The cold and hard steel materials present a sharp contrast with the weak paper materials used to build the church. Besides serving as stage for special events, the church serves as a symbol for strengthening coherence among residents. Thus, its current name “Paper Dome” seems to be a better description for the building. Besides the two different buildings, the park is also full of ecological features with plants grown throughout the site to attract butterflies. On sunny days, butterflies dance all over the place. The ecological ponds on both sides of the park contain rich aquatic plants, and as it is decorated by wooden restaurants, this park is truly and poetically beautiful. As you visit this park, besides admiring the buildings, you will feel your spirit lifted by the vitality of human beings in the wake of disaster.

  • Xiangshan Visitor Center

    Xiangshan Visitor Center

The Xiangshan Visitor Center is both for tourism and administration use. The uniquely designed building has wood-patterned exteriors and wings that stretch like human arms embracing the earth. In addition, the two giant canopy structures, 34 meters long and 8 meters tall each, allow people to enjoy beautiful views of the Sun Moon Lake on top.
【Xiangshan Cafe】 Not only does Xiangshan Café offer lovely views of Sun-Moon Lake, another distinctive feature is the internationally-renowned avant garde building designed by a Japanese architect; the nearby round-the-lake trail is complete and is certain to become a favorite scenic spot for cyclists; adding to its appeal are the building’s lights that by night create a totally different and breathtaking scene and style. Interior design was carried out after discussions with Norihiko Ddan and Associates and also with the assistance of Professor Zhang Zi-long of National Taiwan University of the Arts, the aim being to create a simple-but-fashionable café with a modern style, with main color of the building white to match the building. The main bar combines glass and light elements, creasing a pleasant visual effect. The shop area has an open layout and overturns the disorderly impression that shops often give, increasing the feeling of space and having a simple style. The seats are high-class with a pronounced design feel and the clever use of lights adds interest to the indoor space; as for the outdoor seats, the bright colors create a rich and lively visual effect. The “exterior beauty” of the café alone is captivating; getting to know its “inner beauty” is a really good reason to visit Xiangshan Cafe when you visit Sun Moon Lake.

    Star-of-Cianjhen Bike Bridge

Star-of-Cianjhen Bike Bridge is the second cyclist bridge in Kaohsiung, which across Zhongshan and Kaixuan Roads with an accompanying tree lined pedestrian bridge constructed in October 2011 and finished in April 2013. This project is located in an important position. It is a node of three bike paths including Formosa Boulevard Bike Path, West Side Harbor Line Bike Path, Cianjhen River Bike Path. However, Zhongshan and Kaixuan Roads are two main roads that link to Kaohsiung harbor and downtown. We can see a lot of truck, car, and motorcycle crowded on the road. Every biker and pedestrian are always exposed to the dangerous. Further, the bike paths are also cut off by these two main roads. The system of bicycle and pedestrian should be re-planned and re-connected. Considering the safety of all citizens, all ramps slope were less than 8% to meet the bicycles and accessibility ramps standards. Thus the accessible elevators and accessibility handrails were designed, so that all citizens can enjoy in this wonderful urban space. It provides a friendly environment for cyclist and pedestrians, and also solves the problems of the connection between metro station R6 and community. In 2010, Kaohsiung was featured by CNN as being one of the top cycling cities in Asia, and Star-of-Cianjhen Bike Bridge also obtained several praises in Taiwan. After completion of the project, it will provide the safe, comfortable cycling environment and complete the cyclist network in Kaohsiung.

This service stop is at the intersection of Provincial Route 9 and 199, which demarcates the point between Pingtung and Taitung.

  • Duoliang Station

Duoliang Station-Station with the most beautiful sea view

After called the most beautiful station, Duoliang Station has attracted more and more tourists, due to the juxtaposition of railway, mountain and ocean. It is actually not difficult to find this station. There is an obvious indicator at 417.5km on No.9 Provincial Highway. Then turn right and go upward. After this station was abolished, the roads previously connected to the platform have been removed. Now people can only stand on the roof of the station to overlook the Pacific scenery. Even so, its charm still remains. Although this station is not used any more, there are still trains passing. When a train rapidly passes in front into the cave, along with the background of blue ocean, rail fans would definitely be crazy for here.
